Installing System Center 2012 Operations Manager

Introduction

Microsoft System Center 2012 Operations Manager monitors the IT infrastructure and networks. The monitoring is done by management server or servers in a management group. This management group is a unique local name of SCOM 2012 environment. The management server has monitoring logic in the form of management packs. A Management pack has set of rules, monitors and tasks for operations manager agent.Management server pushes operations manager agent to a computer and then the agent collects and sends monitoring data to management server in the form of alerts whenever a rule or monitor is triggered.

The management server saves all the data collected and sent by the operations manager agent such as alerts, performance data to operations database. Operations database is a SQL database used to store the monitored object data. The monitored object could be a computer or group of computers, application groups, websites or a resource like disk space and network.

The data is also stored in a data warehouse database for reporting purpose. The management group is managed using Operations console and Web console.
This is three part series article about the installation of System Center 2012 Operations Manager in a test environment.

The hardware requirements for System center 2012 Operations Manager can be calculated using System Center 2012 Sizing Helper. It is available for free download.

Using System Center 2012 Sizing Helper

There is some very useful information that you can get from this tool. For example, the supported configuration page will give us comprehensive information about limitation of management servers and management group and other roles in SCOM 2012. You can calculate number of agents that can be deployed for different monitoring scenarios in SCOM 2012 environment with size helper. This will help in deciding number of server that we want to deploy in a management group.

Let us consider the software prerequisites for a single management server, operations console, web console and operations console and operations database and data warehouse database. Note that we will install above roles on a single Windows 2008 R2 sp1 server.

Installing web server role

We install web server role on the management server which is a built in role for windows 2008 r2 sp1. Select the following role services for web server role and complete the installation as shown in below screenshot.

Web Server Role

These are the role services required for Web server role.

  • Static Content
  • Default Document
  • Directory Browsing
  • HTTP Errors
  • HTTP Logging
  • Request Monitor
  • Request Filtering
  • Static Content Compression
  • Web Server (IIS) Support
  • IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
  • ASP.NET
  • Windows Authentication
These requirement are for Operations Console in SCOM 2012 environment. You meet this requirement wherever we install Operations Console.

Installing Windows Features

We also require windows features from Windows 2008 R2 sp1 server manager for management server, operations console, web server role and databases as per the prerequisite table at the beginning of this article.

.Net 3.5 sp1 installation

First install .Net 3.5 sp1 framework from server manager > select Features and also make sure that HTTP activation is selected.

Install .Net 3.5

Installing .Net 4.0 Framework

The .Net framework 4.0 is also required for SCOM 2012 deployment. You can download the .Net Framework 4.0 from download site of Microsoft. Once you have run the setup, accept the license agreement and click install to complete the installation.

.Net Framework 4.0

Click finish to complete the installation

After you have completed the installation, click Finish.

Allow .Net Framework 4.0 in IIS

The .Net framework 4.0 is not allowed by default in IIS 7.5 when you install it. To allow .Net framework 4.0 in IIS 7.5, open IIS 7.5 manager and select the web server name.

Click ISAPI and CGI Restrictions and select ASP.NET v4.0.30319 and then click Allow.

Allow .Net framework 4.0

Remote Administration Tool installation

From server manager, once again click select Features and then select Remote Administration Tools and select AD DS and AD LDS Tools.

After installation, click Finish to complete the installation.

Report Viewer 2010 redistributable

For viewing SCOM 2012 reports, you need to install the Report Viewer 2010 redistributable which is free to download from Microsoft.

Once you run the setup for report viewer 2010, click next on the installation wizard.

Once installation is complete, you can click finish and close the wizard.

Installation completed successfully

Creating service accounts

There are some other prerequisites such as service accounts required for System Center 2012 Operations Manager and for other monitoring purposes we will use Local system account of SCOM 2012 server.

  1. Data Reader account
  2. Data Writer account
As the name suggest, these accounts are used for reading information and writing information to operations database continuously. You will mention these accounts later when we run the Operations manager setup.

Summary

In this first article of the series, we talked about hardware requirement and software requirement for deploying System Center 2012 Operations Manager. In the next part, we perform a SQL installation which is a requirement for SCOM 2012 Operations database and Data warehouse database.
